How to monitor Google AI Overviews and AI Mode
This guide describes a measurement method. Automated AI prompt, mention and citation monitoring is not available in the current public BeKnow product. Collect the observations with an external service or a documented manual sample.

That distinction is the basis of an honest monitoring workflow.
What Google now reports
Google documents a dedicated generative AI performance report for supported Search Console properties. It covers impressions for links shown from the site in AI Overviews and AI Mode, with dimensions including page, country, device and date. The data is also part of the wider Web search performance data.
Availability and visible detail can depend on rollout and sufficient impressions. Search Labs experiments are excluded. Use the actual report present in the authorised property rather than assuming every site has identical access.
Three evidence layers to keep separate
| Layer | Source | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Direct Google visibility | Search Console generative AI report | Measure eligible site impressions by page, country, device and time |
| Search traffic outcome | Search Console Web report and analytics | Inspect clicks, landing pages and post-click value |
| Prompt research | Selected Gemini or other model runs | Explore wording, competitors and sources under a documented configuration |
The third layer can generate hypotheses. It must not be labelled as an AI Overview observation unless it actually came from Google Search's measured feature.
Connect the correct Search Console property
If the generative AI report is available, create a baseline by date, then inspect pages, countries and devices. Record whether the newest line is preliminary and preserve the filters used.
Read impressions in context
An impression means an eligible link from your property was shown under Google's counting rules. It does not mean the page was quoted, recommended or clicked. Compare:
- trend in generative AI impressions;
- pages receiving those impressions;
- countries and devices involved;
- clicks and engagement where available;
- changes in ordinary Web search performance.
Do not convert an impression count into “citation rate” unless the source defines and supports that metric.
Diagnose page-level changes
When one page gains visibility, identify the queries and intents it already serves in Search Console and review its content. When a page loses visibility, compare periods and avoid assuming an algorithmic penalty. Demand, eligibility, competition and feature triggering can change.
Google states that the same foundational SEO practices apply to AI features and that there are no special extra technical requirements beyond being indexed and eligible for a Search snippet. Useful, reliable, people-first content remains the target; there is no separate “AI Overview schema” guaranteed to win inclusion.
Use the Search Console metrics guide before interpreting page changes.
Add prompt monitoring without mixing datasets
A stable prompt sample can help inspect competitor names, common source types and how a model frames the category. Label it by model and route. The Gemini visibility guide explains the difference between model recall and grounded web answers.
Store those observations beside, not inside, the direct Google series. If both point to the same missing content asset, confidence in the opportunity increases; neither proves causality.
Frequently asked questions
Do not assume that. Use authorised Search Console reporting as the first-party source and identify any separate SERP observation by its provider and parameters.
Why do I not see the generative AI report?
The property may lack sufficient impressions or access. Verify the correct property and current Search Console availability.
Does a Gemini API citation mean my site appeared in AI Overviews?
No. They are different surfaces and measurement paths.
Is special AI markup required?
Google says no additional technical requirement exists beyond normal Search eligibility; structured data should still match visible content and supported Search features.
Start with Google's own evidence
Use Search Console to establish whether Google generative AI features showed links to the site, then connect those page-level observations to content and business outcomes. Keep model tests as a separate research layer.
What BeKnow keeps
Keep interventions, hypotheses, assets, observations and decisions in a searchable workspace. Record what is known and what still needs checking.
A change in performance after an intervention does not prove that the intervention caused it. Cross-platform attribution and a complete analytics dashboard are not available today.
Project memory and data imports do not require an AI model key. A compatible external AI client may have its own costs. BYOK applies only to available functions that actually call an external provider.

Start with one project, one documented change and the evidence needed to review it. Source connections.
