    How to monitor your brand's visibility in Gemini

    This guide describes a measurement method. Automated AI prompt, mention and citation monitoring is not available in the current public BeKnow product. Collect the observations with an external service or a documented manual sample.

    This is a sample, not a universal Gemini ranking. Results can change with model version, Google Search grounding, language, location, date and the Gemini product or API surface being used.

    First decide what you are measuring

    “Gemini visibility” can mean different things:

    • a Gemini model response obtained through an API route;
    • a grounded response where Google Search is enabled;
    • an answer shown in a consumer Gemini product;
    • a Google Search feature such as AI Overviews.

    Build a useful Gemini prompt set

    Start with 10–20 questions that reflect real decisions. Include:

    • category discovery: “Which tools help a small agency monitor AI citations?”;
    • problem solving: “How can I find pages losing organic clicks?”;
    • comparison: “Search Console or a SERP API for rank tracking?”;
    • alternatives: “Tools similar to [known category product] for a consultant?”;
    • trust: “Which sources explain BYOK for SEO software?”

    Avoid including your brand name in every question. That tests recall, not unprompted category visibility. Use the AI visibility prompt framework to keep intent and market balanced.

    Choose a specific Gemini model available through your OpenRouter account. Keep model, prompt wording, language and search setting stable. Record the execution date and distinguish successful answers from provider errors.

    If web search or native grounding is enabled, retain the returned source URLs. OpenRouter can standardise web citations as URL annotations, but routing and available capabilities may change. Check the selected model's current capabilities before each new baseline.

    Measure more than the brand name

    For every valid response, inspect:

    SignalWhat it tells you
    MentionThe brand appeared in the answer
    CitationA source URL was attributed
    Owned-domain citationA page from your site supported the answer
    ProminenceThe brand was central, secondary or incidental
    Competitor presenceOther brands occupied the decision set
    AccuracyProducts and claims were represented correctly

    A mention without a source and a citation without a recommendation are different outcomes. The guide to mention rate versus citation rate explains how to report them separately.

    Turn the observation into an action

    Open the cited pages. If Gemini repeatedly cites competitors, compare their page type, evidence and intent coverage with your inventory. Do not copy wording or assume a citation proves superior content. It may reveal a missing definition, comparison, primary source or crawlable product fact.

    Connect findings to Search Console when possible. A page with existing impressions and weak AI citation may need a focused update; a genuinely uncovered intent may justify a new page. Follow the update-or-create decision guide.

    A monthly comparison that remains honest

    Keep one core sample unchanged and add exploratory prompts separately. Compare only runs using compatible configurations. Report valid responses, errors and sample size beside rates. A move from one mention out of five to two out of five is not the same evidence as a move from 100 out of 500 to 200 out of 500.

    Do not claim that your result represents every Gemini user. It is an operational observation of selected prompts and settings.

    Frequently asked questions

    Is Gemini API output identical to the Gemini app?

    No. Product instructions, retrieval, model version and user context can differ. Name the surface you measured.

    Do I need web grounding to measure citations?

    You need a retrieval mode that returns attributable sources if citations are the metric. Without it, you can still observe mentions but should not infer live web visibility.

    No. It can organise repeated observations and the evidence needed to decide what to improve.

    Should I translate the English prompts for Spain?

    Use the same intent, but write natural local questions and assess Spanish-market sources. Literal translation can create an artificial sample.

    Measure a defined Gemini experience

    A useful monitor states exactly what ran, preserves the sources and compares like with like. That makes the result actionable without turning an API sample into a claim about all Gemini answers.

    What BeKnow keeps

    Keep interventions, hypotheses, assets, observations and decisions in a searchable workspace. Record what is known and what still needs checking.

    A change in performance after an intervention does not prove that the intervention caused it. Cross-platform attribution and a complete analytics dashboard are not available today.

    Project memory and data imports do not require an AI model key. A compatible external AI client may have its own costs. BYOK applies only to available functions that actually call an external provider.

    Next step

    Start with one project, one documented change and the evidence needed to review it. Source connections.

    Record your first intervention. How it works.
