OpenRouter is a service that gives applications access to different AI models through a common interface. Instead of integrating every model company separately, an application sends a request to OpenRouter and specifies the model it needs. OpenRouter authenticates the request, routes it to a compatible provider and records usage.
OpenRouter is not an AI model
OpenRouter is not another name for ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, and it does not make every model equivalent. It is an access and routing layer. Its catalogue contains models with different capabilities, context windows, speeds, modalities and prices.
The flow has five useful stages:
Several underlying providers may serve the same model. OpenRouter can apply routing rules and fallbacks, so a model and its serving provider are not always the same piece of information. For comparable monitoring, preserve the model, prompt, date and configuration.
Choose a model for the job
The most famous model is not automatically the best choice. Periodic observation benefits from consistency and sustainable cost. A difficult analysis may justify greater capability. Image generation requires a model with visual output. Check the live catalogue because availability and prices change.
Switching models during a measurement series can alter the answers. Keep the configuration stable when tracking a trend and separate experiments from the main sample.
Costs, free models and limits
OpenRouter applies its own billing rules. Usage may depend on tokens, requests, images, tools, reasoning and the serving provider. Some models have free variants under OpenRouter-defined limits and availability. They can help test a workflow, but they are not guaranteed unlimited capacity.

Yes. Functions that do not call external models remain separate. OpenRouter-dependent actions remain inactive until a key is connected.
Does OpenRouter include DataForSEO and Firecrawl?
No. They are independent services with separate credentials and usage.
Does OpenRouter always use the same provider?
Not necessarily. When multiple providers serve a model, routing and fallbacks can change the effective endpoint according to your configuration.
What BeKnow keeps
Keep interventions, hypotheses, assets, observations and decisions in a searchable workspace. Record what is known and what still needs checking.
A change in performance after an intervention does not prove that the intervention caused it. Cross-platform attribution and a complete analytics dashboard are not available today.
Project memory and data imports do not require an AI model key. A compatible external AI client may have its own costs. BYOK applies only to available functions that actually call an external provider.
