OpenRouter, Firecrawl and DataForSEO: when BeKnow needs them — current scope

Provider concepts remain useful, but earlier instructions for BeKnow’s SEO, writing, image or AI-visibility screens no longer describe the current public product. Saving a provider key does not enable those retired workflows.

Provider concepts remain useful, but earlier instructions for BeKnow’s SEO, writing, image or AI-visibility screens no longer describe the current public product. Saving a provider key does not enable those retired workflows.

How to apply the method today

    1. Define one question and the page, product or project it concerns. Record the source and date of each observation. A provider response is evidence to interpret, not an approved business decision.

    2. Carry out the specialist research or content work in the external tool appropriate to the task. Check its current documentation, access requirements and costs. The availability of a provider API does not imply that every capability is integrated in BeKnow.

    3. In BeKnow, record the intervention, its hypothesis and the relevant asset. Add the before and after where available. Identify missing evidence rather than filling the gap with an estimate.

    4. For supported WordPress and Search Console work, inspect the available verification and checkpoint evidence. For other sources, the initial imports remain separate from automated intervention outcomes.

    5. Record whether to continue, stop or investigate, why, and the next step. A review date is a recorded reminder, not a fully managed assignment or notification workflow.

    The underlying method

The useful question is not “What is the complete stack?” but “Which source is missing for this task?” OpenRouter, Firecrawl and DataForSEO solve different problems and are not interchangeable.

The free layer: data and context you already control

Search Console supplies queries, pages, clicks, impressions, CTR and position for properties you authorise. It is first-party evidence of how Google exposed the site, not purchased estimates. A sitemap declares URLs; memory stores sourced facts; the plan records decisions.

Firecrawl: when the actual page content is required

A sitemap contains URLs, not necessarily current page text. Search Console describes performance, not what a source says. Firecrawl is used when a workflow must open a public URL, extract content and make it available for an audit, enriched inventory or comparison.

It is also useful after AI visibility sampling. OpenRouter can return an answer with cited sources; Firecrawl can read those pages and verify what they support. The difference between a competing source and an owned page can then become a content action.

Consumption generally depends on pages read and the Firecrawl plan. Begin with important URLs instead of crawling an entire site for a one-page problem. See the Firecrawl integration for current roles and limitations.

DataForSEO: when you need external market data

Search Console shows queries where your site earned impressions. It does not fully describe potential demand, SERPs where the site is absent or positions tracked through a dedicated external method. DataForSEO enters when you need search volume, competitor result analysis or external rank tracking.

It is not mandatory for diagnosing a decline in Search Console, building brand memory or monitoring AI answers. It becomes useful when validating opportunities beyond first-party history, comparing SERP competitors or following terms that Search Console does not represent as a rank tracker.

Perplexity, OpenAI and other providers: keep layers distinct

OpenRouter can provide access to models from multiple companies, but it remains the provider through which a request is routed and accounted. Connecting OpenRouter is not the same as connecting every model vendor account directly. A direct Perplexity key is another integration when a function supports it.

Administrator-only configurations can remain separate for internal work. They must not become hidden spend produced by free accounts.

Which provider belongs to each workflow

To monitor AI visibility, OpenRouter is necessary to obtain model answers. Firecrawl is an optional next step to read cited sources. DataForSEO is unnecessary unless the AI gap must be connected to search volume or traditional SERPs.

To build brand memory, you can add documents and notes without any of the three. Firecrawl helps import or update public pages. OpenRouter can assist extraction and synthesis, while human review remains necessary.

For keyword research beyond site data, DataForSEO becomes the main external source. OpenRouter can classify or cluster results; Firecrawl can read selected competing pages. This order prevents paying three providers for a decision that needed one.

Example: investigate a citation gap without enabling everything

A brand is absent from five comparison prompts. OpenRouter is necessary to run and preserve the answers. Analysis finds two domains cited repeatedly. Firecrawl can then read only those pages and compare their evidence and structure with the brand site.

DataForSEO is not needed yet because the decision concerns AI sources, not search demand. If the audit reveals a new topic and you want to estimate demand and SERPs, connect it later. Spending follows questions rather than a pre-enabled architecture.

    Keep provider costs under control

Disable automatic top-ups for a hard ceiling. Revoke unused keys and avoid one credential across many applications. Reduce cadence or stop a workflow when it does not support a concrete decision.

No. Begin with site, sitemap and Search Console. Add a key when a workflow clearly states what it unlocks.

Does OpenRouter include Firecrawl and DataForSEO?

No. OpenRouter supplies models, Firecrawl reads pages and DataForSEO supplies external SEO data. Accounts and billing are separate.

    What happens without a key?

The dependent feature remains inactive and identifies the needed provider. Other parts of the workspace continue working.

Provider accounts enforce the effective limits. Configure them there, inspect activity and remove a key when you want requests to stop.

    What BeKnow keeps

Keep interventions, hypotheses, assets, observations and decisions in a searchable workspace. Record what is known and what still needs checking.

Preserve the reason for a choice and the next step alongside the intervention. Review dates are recorded; a complete assignment and review inbox is not available yet.

    Connections and limits

Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento, GA4, Google Ads, Meta Ads and HubSpot have initial read connectors. Imports are started manually and their data can be inspected or read through MCP. Coverage and setup differ by provider; automatic links to intervention outcomes are still being developed.

A change in performance after an intervention does not prove that the intervention caused it. Cross-platform attribution and a complete analytics dashboard are not available today.

    AI and costs

Project memory and data imports do not require an AI model key. A compatible external AI client may have its own costs. BYOK applies only to available functions that actually call an external provider.

    Next step

Start with one project, one documented change and the evidence needed to review it. Source connections.

Record your first intervention. How it works.
