How to monitor your brand's visibility in Claude

This guide describes a measurement method. Automated AI prompt, mention and citation monitoring is not available in the current public BeKnow product. Collect the observations with an external service or a documented manual sample.

To monitor a brand in Claude, first decide whether you are testing model recall or a web-search answer. Then run a stable set of buyer prompts with the same model and search configuration, recording mentions, competitors and cited URLs separately.

Recall and web visibility are different tests

A Claude response without web search can reveal whether the model names or describes a brand from its available context. It does not prove that the brand's current website was retrieved.

Anthropic's web-search tool gives supported Claude models access to current web content and returns citations. When that capability is enabled in the measured route, cited URLs can support a web-visibility analysis. Preserve the configuration and sources with the result.

TestWhat it can showWhat it cannot prove
Model-only promptLearned brand recall and representationCurrent web discovery or citation
Web-search promptObserved retrieval, mention and cited pagesEvery answer in claude.ai
Branded promptAccuracy when the brand is suppliedUnprompted category discovery
Unbranded promptPresence in a category decision setTotal market awareness

    Build a representative sample

Choose 10–20 prompts across discovery, comparison, implementation and trust. Use real customer language. Keep a small branded subset for accuracy and an unbranded core for discovery.

    For example:

    • “What tools can combine Search Console data with an editorial plan?”
    • “How can a small SEO agency keep client context available to an AI assistant?”
    • “What is BYOK and when is it useful?”
    • “Which tools monitor brand citations in AI answers?”

The prompt-selection framework explains how to avoid a sample made of near-duplicate questions.

Select one Claude model exposed by your connected OpenRouter account and record its identifier. Keep prompt, language, model and search mode stable. If the route supports native web search, confirm that it is enabled and that citation URLs are returned.

Mark provider errors separately. Anthropic documents that a web-search failure can be represented inside an otherwise successful API response, so an HTTP success alone is not proof that retrieval worked. A failed search is not a brand absence.

    Classify every valid response

Record mention, owned-domain citation, third-party citation, prominence, competitors and factual accuracy. Also inspect whether Claude represents the product correctly. A confident but outdated description is a visibility problem of a different kind.

Use mention rate and citation rate as separate measures. When a source appears, follow the guide to analysing AI-cited pages.

From a missing mention to useful work

Do not create an article for every omission. Group results by intent and inspect repeated patterns. If competitors are cited for a concept your site already covers, compare the live pages. If the product is described inaccurately, strengthen the canonical product facts and brand memory. If a high-value question has no suitable page, evaluate a new asset.

Search Console can show whether the relevant page already receives search visibility. That evidence helps choose between an update and a new URL instead of reacting to a single generated answer.

    Compare Claude over time

Keep a fixed core sample and version any deliberate changes. Compare compatible runs by model, locale and search mode. Report valid runs and errors beside the percentages. Model updates or routing changes should create a new baseline rather than being hidden inside the old series.

    Frequently asked questions

Does Claude always search the web?

No. It depends on the product, model and tools enabled. Record whether search was available and actually used.

Is an OpenRouter Claude response identical to claude.ai?

No. System instructions, tools, routing and user context can differ.

Count it as a mention, not as a citation. Both can matter, but they answer different questions.

It can preserve evidence and organise actions. Publication, product corrections and outreach still require an explicit decision.

Make the measured Claude route explicit

The result becomes credible when every rate can be traced to a prompt, model, search state, answer and source. That is enough to guide an improvement without pretending to measure all Claude conversations.

    What BeKnow keeps

Keep interventions, hypotheses, assets, observations and decisions in a searchable workspace. Record what is known and what still needs checking.

A change in performance after an intervention does not prove that the intervention caused it. Cross-platform attribution and a complete analytics dashboard are not available today.

Project memory and data imports do not require an AI model key. A compatible external AI client may have its own costs. BYOK applies only to available functions that actually call an external provider.
